How to Play UNO

What Is UNO?

UNO is a card game that is famous all over the world. The rules are easy to learn and the game is full of fun. The goal is to be the first player to play all the cards in your hand.

Background

An American named Merle Robbins made UNO in 1971. He wanted a simple family game. Later, it became one of the most popular card games in the world. Today, there are many versions, but the classic way is still the most loved.

Goal

Players must match the color or number on the table and play all their cards. The first player to finish all their cards wins the round.

Getting Ready

What You Need

One full UNO deck (108 cards). It has:

Number cards 0-9 in four colors (red, blue, green, yellow).

Zero appears once per color; 1-9 appear twice.

Action cards (two of each color):

Skip: next player loses a turn.

Reverse: order flips (clockwise to counter-clockwise or back).

Draw Two: next player picks up two cards and loses a turn.

Wild cards (four each):

Wild: choose any color to continue.

Wild Draw Four: next player picks up four cards and loses a turn; you also pick the next color.

Player Count

UNO works with 2-10 people. Four to eight is best. Too many players slows the game; too few makes it less fun.

Seating

Everyone sits in a circle. Choose the first player randomly or by age, house rule, or whoever won last time.

How to Play

Dealing

Each player gets 7 cards face-down. The rest of the deck becomes a draw pile in the middle, face-down.

Starting the Pile

Flip the top card of the draw pile face-up to start the discard pile.

If it is a number card, play moves clockwise.

If it is an action card, do what it says, then continue.

If it is a Wild or Wild Draw Four, bury it back in the deck and flip again until you get a colored card.

Taking Turns

On your turn you must play one card that matches either the color, the number, or the symbol on the top of the discard pile.

If you cannot play, draw one card from the draw pile.

If that new card fits, you may play it right away.

If it does not fit, keep it and end your turn.

Action and Wild Cards

Skip: the next player loses their turn.

Reverse: the order of play flips.

Draw Two: the next player draws two cards and misses their turn.

Wild: play it any time; you choose the color that continues.

Wild Draw Four: the next player draws four cards and misses their turn. You also pick the next color. You may only play this card when you have no cards of the current color in your hand. Others may challenge. If they are right, you draw four instead. If they are wrong, they draw six.

Special Rules

Saying UNO: when you have only one card left, you must say “UNO” out loud. If someone catches you before the next card is played, you draw two penalty cards.

Running out of cards: if the draw pile empties, shuffle the discard pile (except the top card) to make a new draw pile.

Common Questions

What if I still cannot play after drawing?

Keep the card you drew and end your turn. The next player goes.

Can I play more than one card at a time?

No, standard rules allow only one card per turn unless your group has agreed to a house rule.

Can I use any color for the +4 Wild?

Yes, but you must have no cards of the current color in your hand when you play it. If someone challenges and you do have that color, you draw the four cards instead.

Can I talk or give hints during other players’ turns?

Standard rules say no talking or helping. Keep quiet and let everyone make their own choices.

Fun House Rules

Team Mode

Split into teams. Partners sit opposite each other. They may give silent signals but may not exchange cards.

Double Score UNO

Each time someone says UNO, all others must draw an extra card. If you are caught not saying UNO, you draw double the penalty.

Custom Action Cards

Add cards like “Swap Hands” or “Double Reverse” to make the game wilder. Agree on their effects before you start.

Tips to Win

1. Keep several colors in your hand so you are never stuck.

2. Save Skip, Draw Two, and Wild cards for moments when an opponent is close to winning.

3. Watch what colors others play and what they draw; it tells you what they lack.

4. Play number cards first, keeping Wilds for the final push.

5. Say UNO clearly and at a normal volume—too quiet invites a penalty, too loud tips off rivals.

Summary

UNO is easy to learn but hides plenty of strategy. Master the basic rules, then mix in house rules to keep things fresh. Next time you shuffle, remember: match, draw, play smart—and shout UNO like you mean it!
